Marketing loves an acronym. Sit through one agency meeting and you’ll hear CTR, ROAS, LTV and “let’s retarget the TOFU audience” before the coffee arrives. Nodding along is a valid survival strategy, but knowing what these mean helps you ask better questions, read reports and spot when a number is being used to impress you. This glossary covers 50 terms in six groups, each in plain English, with formulas where they help.

Content and strategy

  1. Content pillars: The 3 to 5 core themes your content keeps returning to, such as education, proof and behind the scenes.
  2. Content buckets: Often used as a synonym for pillars. I use it for the smaller groups under a pillar, like “myth busting” under “education.” Usage varies by team, so pick one meaning and stay consistent.
  3. Content bank: Your stash of ideas, tagged by pillar, format and platform.
  4. Content calendar: The schedule that decides what goes out, where and when.
  5. Copy: The written words in your content, such as captions, on-screen text and scripts.
  6. Hook: The opening seconds of a video, built to stop the scroll.
  7. CTA (call to action): The instruction that tells people what to do next, like “follow,” “book a call” or “shop now.”
  8. Evergreen content: Content that stays useful over time, unlike trend-based posts.
  9. Repurposing: Turning one idea into several formats, such as a reel, a carousel and a LinkedIn post.
  10. UGC (user-generated content): Content made by customers or fans, not the brand. “UGC creators” also describes people paid to make content in that style.
  11. Brand voice: How your brand sounds in writing and speech.
  12. ICP (ideal customer profile): The type of customer who gets the most value from you and is the best fit for your business.

Reach and engagement

  1. Algorithm: The system a platform uses to decide what content shows up for whom.
  2. Reach: The number of unique accounts that saw your content.
  3. Impressions: The total number of times your content was displayed, including repeat views by the same person. Impressions are always equal to or higher than reach.
  4. Engagement rate (ER%): Engagements (likes, comments, shares, saves) as a percentage of a base, usually reach or followers. A common version is engagements divided by reach, times 100. Formulas vary, so use one consistently.
  5. Retention (watch time): How much of a video people actually watch. It shows whether your hook and pacing work.
  6. CTR (click-through rate): Clicks divided by impressions, times 100.
  7. Vanity metrics: Numbers that look good but don’t drive results, like follower count on its own.
  8. KPI (key performance indicator): A metric tied to a specific goal, such as leads generated or video completion rate.
  9. Social listening: Tracking mentions of your brand, competitors and keywords across social media.
  10. Facebook Insights: Meta’s built-in analytics for pages, showing reach, engagement and audience data. It now lives inside Meta’s newer tools, and names change often, so check the current label.

Organic vs paid

  1. Organic content: Unpaid content that reaches people through followers, shares and the algorithm.
  2. Paid content: Content you pay to promote through ads.
  3. Boosting: Paying to promote an existing post to a wider audience. It’s simpler than a full ad campaign.
  4. Dark posts: Ads shown to selected audiences without appearing on your page’s public feed. They’re handy for testing different creatives and audiences.
  5. Ad rights: Permission to use someone’s content, such as a creator’s video, in your paid ads. Agree the duration and platforms in writing.
  6. Whitelisting (partnership ads): Running ads through a creator’s handle instead of your brand’s, with their permission.
  7. Retargeting: Showing ads to people who already interacted with you, such as site visitors or video viewers.
  8. Lookalike audience: An audience the ad platform builds from people who resemble your existing customers or followers.
  9. A/B testing: Testing two versions of something, changing one variable, to see which performs better.
  10. Ad creative: The visual and copy of an ad.

Performance marketing numbers

  1. CPC (cost per click): Ad spend divided by clicks.
  2. CPM (cost per mille): The cost of 1,000 impressions.
  3. CPA (cost per acquisition): Ad spend divided by conversions, meaning the cost of each desired action.
  4. CAC (customer acquisition cost): Total sales and marketing spend divided by the number of new customers won.
  5. ROAS (return on ad spend): Revenue from ads divided by ad spend. A ROAS of 4 means 4 earned for every 1 spent.
  6. ROI (return on investment): Gain minus cost, divided by cost. It’s broader than ROAS because it counts all costs.
  7. LTV (lifetime value): The total revenue or profit a customer brings over their whole relationship with you. Compare it with CAC.
  8. Conversion rate: The percentage of people who complete a desired action, such as buying or signing up.
  9. Attribution: Deciding which touchpoint gets credit for a conversion.

Funnel and conversion

  1. Funnel (TOFU, MOFU, BOFU): The customer journey from top (awareness), through middle (consideration), to bottom (decision).
  2. Lead magnet: A free resource, like a guide or template, offered in exchange for contact details.
  3. Landing page: A page built for one action, with no distractions.
  4. Social proof: Reviews, testimonials and numbers that show others trust you.
  5. Influencer marketing: Partnering with creators to reach their audiences.

Search and AI

  1. SEO (search engine optimization): Optimizing content to rank higher on search engines.
  2. Keyword: A phrase people type into a search engine.
  3. AEO (answer engine optimization): Structuring content so answer engines and AI assistants can pull direct answers from it, using clear definitions, headings and FAQs.
  4. GEO (generative engine optimization): Optimizing to get mentioned or cited in AI-generated answers. It overlaps with AEO, and both terms are still evolving.
